"Courageous Steps" by Jerry Brodey
“The first duty of love is to listen. Furthermore, if you sense that the world is animated by a loving presence and your own life somehow witnessed, you listen back in the spirit of conversation.” – Paul Tillich
Sometimes your head says one thing, your heart another and your gut yet another. In the safe container of counsel there is time and space for all the voices inside you to be heard, witnessed and mirrored.
Through the tracking of thoughts, sensations and emotions you stand to realign and gain perspective, to understand what the old story is and what new one must emerge. In an atmosphere of acceptance, bringing your attention and voice to each concern, you discover an innate knowing that can guide you.
In its simplest form, mentoring is an invaluable resource in our journey to get to the heart of it all and find the right questions. Whether you are in need of counsel on a particular roadblock, a creative project, a dream you want to manifest, or wanting to get unstuck from an identity that no longer serves you, consider Mentoring Ways.
What do sessions look like?
Each session is a bit of a mystery because one never knows what will show up and it helps for us to bring curiosity. Bringing consciousness to the way we communicate requires heart and courage. It is a practice. For example, if you are working through an issue with your partner or with yourself; before engaging in conversations, notice what tone, openness, curiosity, sensation and heart is present/not present. What sensations do you feel in your body as emotions arise asking “what’s here now?”
Practicing “embodied presence” is an important element in our quality of connection to self and others. Embodied presence by physicalizing or animating, helps us get out of our head to notice unhealthy patterns to better understand what keeps "the ogres, the dragons, the negative critical voices" in place. When working individually or as a couple, big feelings can arise along with confusion. Understanding and discernment between what feelings are and what is the underlying issue is integral to change. Without "the judge" it becomes easier to approach our fears and anxieties out in the open. And, awareness of the role of our "judge" is important because it tells us about the ways we create "Us versus Them" paradigms in the world. This process of discernment can create more capacity to trust ourselves and others.
Sometimes we get triggered and the same old patterns come into play. Naming the trigger - not blaming or shaming, taking a step back, finding our heart, having compassion for the work we are each doing - helps us soften and see the trigger from a different perspective. All these are skill sets, tools to help track and navigate change, develop more options and make better choices.

"Our mentoring sessions with Kim and Jerry were meaningful and provided a great sense of relief. They worked with us to develop a better sense of each other and to pinpoint areas we each needed to grow-in. They helped us gain an awareness of the spoken and unspoken dynamics occurring between us and worked with us on seeing these, on feeling their impact and on changing them, as uncomfortable as it felt for us to do so at times. We were able to feel the benefits these things created in our relationship." Sophie A.
"During each session Kim and Jerry each brought different perspectives and approaches. Their calm, professional approach was reassuring. I found their breadth of experience made them valuable coaches, each in their own way. The exercises they suggested helped me get unstuck from certain entrenched behaviours and achieve personal growth." Finley M.
"As a conscious elder, Jerry Brodey brings a depth of wisdom and personal sharing that opened me to deeper aspects of myself. Jerry’s involvement in Community, youth and men’s work is inspiring and he has a way of holding space for others to show up fully. You can be sure to be embraced by his presence.” Owen Williams, Relationship Coach
“Jerry is a gifted mentor and guide who will accompany and help you undertake a deep journey into the wild spaces of nature and your soul.” Bruce Lyne, Teacher
"Being a seasoned facilitator myself and having been on countless retreats, I was most delighted and awe-struck by how my experience with Jerry at the farm held a disarming and potent magic for me. I relaxed into a deeper me, more quickly and deeply and unconsciously than I expected. Jerry's guidance is spacious yet deep, easy and inviting while also provocative and daring. My soul is begging to go back." David Jurasek, Husband, Father, Sensei and Leader
“Jerry Brodey is a master of a very unique and important process: the ability to guide young people in the process of knowing themselves emotionally and in relation to others. His work bringing together spiritual wisdom, the arts, nature, and just pure common sense, will help any young man or woman as they navigate the treacherous waters of today’s challenging times. His insight and guidance for me (and my son when he was a young adolescent) will never be forgotten.” Chris von Baeyer, VP of Client Relations at the Ariel Group
"Jerry is both a shepherd and a wolf! In group or individual processes, he makes sure no one gets lost yet he stays close to his animal instincts enough to sniff out participants' deepest needs and longings. He solidly provides the transformational container for personal risk, depth and development." Matthew Kelly, Jungian Analyst & Psychotherapist
“Jerry has a capacity for being powerfully present and empathetic, a true gift in men these days. While he has been able to meet my darkest depths with compassion, he has been able to bring humour and playfulness to our interactions that wakes me from my slumber. He has a skill in calling forth my best self and my truest version of what being a man means to me.” Michael McCarthy, Social Worker
"Jerry offers his gentle, powerful, insightful and loving mentoring to the community. I've had the privilege and pleasure to receive his support over the last ten years, and can honestly say that he (and his wife on other occasions) have been essential to many healing processes both emotional, spiritual and creative in my life…" Grace Kaya, Performer and Yoga Teacher
"Kim and Jerry Brodey of the Red Canoe Studio have mentored us over the past 7 years as a couple and separately. They have acted not only in a mentorship capacity through speech, guidance and body work, but as a beacon of love, as they themselves (a couple) embody the principles of a what deep, loving relationship is, and what it means to move through hardship and restore connection. During our pregnancy they helped us to connect in such a powerful and profound way with each other and our child that we were able to enjoy an ecstatic birth experience and journey into parenthood. We will forever be in deep gratitude to them, and would highly recommend them to anyone in any of their mentoring or healing capacities. In gratitude…"

"Being with Kim and Jerry in their home/life/studio provides the nurturing sanctuary for me to integrate what I feel going on inside me. In their joint presence I am witnessed in my life by souls who do not wish to change a thing I share through rescuing or inserting their wisdom. In doing so, I arrive home into my deeper self and release the story that is creating confusion and a sense of separation. By the end of the session, this return is complete and I leave feeling the love I am: open, alive and no need to keep up the persevering diligence I arrived with. Thank you Kim and Jerry for living the life they way you do, it touches my heart every time." Celeste Shirley, Kinesiologist, The Yoga House
"Kim and Jerry provided an anchor for me during a time when I needed someone outside myself to help bring stillness and clarity within myself. Through their heartfelt listening and reflection, facilitation to follow sensations in my body beyond words/thoughts/feelings, and by providing a safe place where I could tell myself the truth out loud, I was able to take steps out of a muddied stuckness and into more fluid motion. As importantly, they acknowledged the very human experience of "stuckness," and so their approach to be with me without judgement or resistance to what I brought taught me to do the same in relationship to myself and others. They offered invaluable tools that I carried away with me." Karen Haffey, Writer
